All About Japan — 2

Religion

In Japan, Shintoism and Buddhism are embraced by most of the people.

Shinto is polytheistic and revolves around the kami (“gods” or “spirits”), supernatural entities believed to inhabit all things.

Four Affirmations of Shinto

  • Tradition and the family.
  • Love of nature: Holding nature sacred.
  • Ritual purity: Ritual bathing to spiritually and physically cleanse yourselves before entering a shrine to worship the kami.
  • Matsuri: Worshipping and honoring gods and ancestral spirits.

Itsukushima (Miyajima) Shrine is one of the most famous ones. It was founded more than 1400 years ago and was registered as a World Heritage site in 1996.

Tradition & Culture

One of the symbols of Japanese tradition is Geisha:

Geisha, geiko, or geigi are a class of female entertainers from Japan trained in traditional styles of performing art, such as Japanese dance and singing. Their distinct appearance is characterized by long, trailing kimono, traditional hairstyles and the oshiroi make-up. Contrary to popular belief, geisha are not prostitutes.

The only difference between them is where they come from. In Kyoto, these women are called geiko whilst in Tokyo, they are known as geisha. To put it simply, a maiko is an apprentice geiko/geisha.

Kyoto, Gion Geisha District, Kyoto:

I short, what a Geisha does is: They are professional entertainers who attend guests during meals, banquets and other occasions. They are trained in various traditional Japanese arts, such as dance and music, as well as in the art of communication.

Tea Ceremonies are another symbolic tradition. It is really taken seriously. There are ways and rules to follow.

Gardening

Japanese trees are very famous. They are commonly good gardeners.

Ginkgo: This one with bright yellow leaves can live up to 2500 years. Name is originated from Chinese “silver” and “apricot” words. This totally unique species is used to cure Alzheimer disease and symbolizes infinity and holiness.

The one with spectacular red leaves: Acer japonica (Japanese Maple): Used for producing syrup. Also very common in the US and Canada. (can be seen in the flag of Canada)

Bonsai: Tray planting is a Japanese art: Bonsai tree grown in pot, can live up to 150 years if taken good care. Very old style of art which can be seen in ancient paintings in the museums.

Fashion

I should not skip how Japanese style is impressive. We shouldn’t be surprised “Kenzo Takada” is from Japan.

Of course, what we immediately recall is:

Kimono.

The rest of the series will come soon..

Stay tuned, stay safe.
